Bushcraft

Learning skills to comfortably be in a wilderness environment are rewarding, build confidence, enhance self reliance and connect us more deeply with nature.  Outdoor education and wilderness guiding have been a huge part of my life and career for over 30 years.

Awareness in the outdoors is an important skill to have for anyone venturing into the backwoods.  These bushcraft workshops are an opportunity to learn more about wilderness immersion and being outdoors.  The workshops are an opportunity for experiential learning which helps to build confidence in ourselves and in an outdoor backwoods environment.

The forest that surrounds Twisted Roots Farm offers an incredible platform to practice and learn bushcraft skills, and these experiential learning workshops offer the basics.

Firemaker. Learn how to make a campfire in the woods. Topics include, sourcing material, emergency kits, using flint and steel, bow drill and the basics of campfire cooking. Full Day workshop, Saturday April 1, 2023.

Wilderness Shelter Building. In this workshop we will explore shelter systems from tarp and bivy to emergency shelters. Other topics include basic knots, setting up ridge lines, natural shelters and gear considerations. Full Day workshop Saturday April 22nd, 2023.

Alone in the Woods. Three day gathering that supports a solo in the woods here at Twisted Roots Farm using all the skills learned in the previous workshops. Friday April 28th to Sunday April 30th.

These day long workshops can be taken individually or as a series this spring. The third workshop, Alone in the Woods, is a full weekend workshop and participants are required to have taken the other two programs, Firemaker and Wilderness Shelter Building as a prerequisite for the Alone in the Woods weekend gathering.

Group size will be kept small, accommodating 2 to 6 participants, allowing for more in depth instruction. Participants interested in the workshops must be 19 years of age or older. The Alone in the Woods workshop is limited to a group size of 4 participants.

All workshops will take place in an outdoor environment at Twisted Roots Farm and participants should be prepared for less than perfect weather conditions and an ability to sit around a campfire for an extended period of time.
